It’s a good day to be a Bostonian. In fact, many New Englanders play hookey from their work or school to partake in the day’s festivities.
But, on Monday April 15th, 2013, all celebrating, relaxing and enjoying a day off from normal life ceased, when the first of 2 bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
And with those explosions, lives were changed forever. Men, women, and children were injured. Several people lost their arms or legs. Three had died, including an 8 year old boy.
Who did this? How did they do this? Why did they do this?
Boston sports became rightfully unimportant. The Bruins postponed their game. The Celtics cancelled their game.
The fiercest rivalries were forgotten and forgiven.
The Red Sox’s arch enemy, the Evil Empire: the hated New York Yankees and their fans became supporters.
A digital billboard on the walls of Yankee Stadium showed the famed “NY” and “B” logos together. Between the logos, 3 words with an encyclopedia size volume of meaning…”United We Stand.”
The Buffalo Sabres, after defeating the Boston Bruins on their home ice of the hallowed “Garden” joined their opponents on the ice. Each player lifted their sticks in the air, as a salute, to the sold out arena of fans. It was a simple gesture to the fans. It was a command, a credo… “B” Strong. The idea was that of a Buffalo player!
Athletes and fans set aside their differences “…It’s just a game…”
The value of human life became more important. Comfort in our security took precedence.
The manhunt was on for 2 suspects. The city of Boston literally shut down. No holds barred. All hands on deck, from across this great nation.
The country waited. Suspect #1 shot dead. But, not before he took the life of a young M.I.T. police officer, who vowed to serve and protect.
Gunfire and bomb blasts at midnight. This was not Hollywood special effects. This was not filmed on a studio set. This happened in a real neighborhood.
People were frightened. People were forced to stay in their homes. This was REAL TERROR!
And then, it was over. Suspect #2 taken alive!
Law Enforcement officers could see their families again. Boston could sleep peacefully. New England could relax. The Nation was secure.
I woke this morning and Cathy shared with me a video from Major League Baseball.
