Declaring independence. What does that mean?
Independent: free from influence, guidance, or control of another.
Interesting concept isn’t it?
But how many of us conform to others’ expectations. We act a certain way because of someone else’s perception of us. We wear our hair neat and tidy. We dress conservatively. We fit the mold.
Hippies in the 60s and early 70s didn’t care about what others thought. They were considered freaks.
And the freaks grew their hair long and wore strange outfits – their flags. They were proud to display their flags. The freaks flew their flags. Let your freak flag fly.
Interesting concept it?
Look at this tree. It’s a freak of nature. I’m sure some scientist has a perfectly good explanation for it. Maybe cross pollination, a hybrid, or something like that.
Who cares? This is a beautiful freaky-looking tree! Healthy as can be and growing strong.
And the owners of this property are letting it show its independence. They are celebrating its uniqueness and its non-conformity.
This tree is on display every day (not just on a holiday), on a heavily traveled road for people to admire. It blows in the wind. Stands strong against snow. Absorbs the rain for nourishment.
I salute you beautiful tree. I salute your independence.
I thank you, owners of this freak, for letting it be whatever it wants to be.
I believe we can learn a lot from nature, if we just pay attention.
Here’s to your freakiness!
Be Kind. Be Thankful. Be Significant.
